Both interns and staff members from UHY Advisors' Michigan practice took a day off from busy season earlier this month and visited students from Burton International Academy in Detroit.
A team of 30 college recruits and other UHY staff joined Beyond Basics - a local nonprofit which looks to strengthen literacy in inner city schools - to help fifth and sixth grade students apply concepts from a presentation on Mexican art history to their own creations.
“We have been working with Beyond Basics for the past five years, pairing our interns and college recruits with students from Detroit Public Schools," stated Rina Henning, UHY's recruiting manager. "The objective of this program is to not only build relationships with students and express creativity through art, but to also give our interns and recruits an understanding of UHY’s commitment to giving back to the community and experiencing a volunteer outing first hand."
Notably, the firm runs its own nonprofit group, UHY Cares, which offers a volunteer-based system wherein staff members can easily give back to their local communities. UHY Cares Michigan alone has provided assistance to more than 150 local charities and families.
Since 1999, Beyond Basics has operated in Detroit to help develop educational skills for grade school children in need.
